SCRAPS and SIDES of Natural Veg-Tanned Cowhide Leather

from $19.00
This is the natural veg-tanned cowhide that I use in my products. Everything from 5-6 oz and thinner is Hermann Oak Natural Strap and Tooling sides. Mostly, I use this leather to make binders, so I end up with relatively large scraps. The 9-10 oz is a belt leather I get from Spain that I use to make my hand-dyed belts. I can split these pieces down to any thickness you need, so take your pick!

Veg-tanned leather, also known as oak-tanned, is cured using tannic acids in tree bark giving it that "firm leather" feel. Compared to the more common methods producing "soft leather", this technique takes longer, costs more and uses safer substances in the process. It is also a much older technique to produce leather. The final product is stiffer, takes dyes and oils readily, and can be tooled and shaped when wetted, keeping that shape when it dries.

When I use this leather in my products, I dye it, then oil it with Neatsfoot Oil Compound, then I finish it with Fiebing's Resolene, an acrylic product. With this process, it comes out beautifully and highlights the natural character and flaws of the piece much like staining wood does.

-Great for crafts, wallets, jewelry, etc.
-Wet forms and stamps beautifully
-Dyes beautifully as well
-Superior quality leathers that I use in my own products
-Approximate size, shape and quality of each piece varies, as pictured

About SIDES:
This is the Hermann Oak Natural Strap Sides that I use in my products. It is an excellent quality veg-tanned cowhide, produced here in the US from domestic hides. This is one of those situations where you get what you pay for. You can find cheaper hides, but they will not be the same quality.

-WHOLE Sides are approximately 25 square feet. They will measure approximately 90 inches long and 40 inches wide at the belly. Note that cowhides are irregularly shaped.

-HALF Sides are approximately 12 1/2 square feet. They will measure approximately 40 x 40 inches -or- 40 x 50 inches depending on which half you get.

-These hides are 5-6 oz in thickness. (2-2.4 mm)

-I can split pieces up to 16 inches wide to any thickness you need. If you're interested in having me split pieces down, contact me for details before ordering.
